The new school year is approaching, and students enrolled in Portugal’s public schools (including homeschooled children officially registered in a public school) are once again eligible for free textbooks through the MEGA voucher program. Here’s what you need to know.
What is the MEGA Free Textbook Program?
The MEGA program (“Manuais Escolares GrAtuitos”) is a government initiative that provides free textbooks to all students enrolled in public basic and secondary schools. The aim is to make sure every child has the textbooks they need, regardless of family income.
How does it work?

Parents or guardians register on the MEGA platform or via the “Edu Rede Escolar” app.

When the vouchers are released (see dates below), you’ll be notified by email.

Log in with your Taxpayer Number (NIF) and credentials (first-time users authenticate through Portal das Finanças).

Download or print your child’s vouchers and exchange them for books at any participating bookstore.
Note: If your child received free textbooks last year, you must return them (in good condition) to the school to get new vouchers this year. This does not apply to 1st Cycle (1st–4th grade) books.
