Every December, I love bringing Christmas into our home with simple and practical decorating steps. This year I filmed and photographed the full process of putting up our Christmas tree. If you want a real-life guide that is easy to follow and doesn’t require perfect Pinterest skills, this post is exactly that.
Below I break down how I assembled the tree, organised the decorations and added the lights, ornaments and final touches.
What You Need
- Tree base and branches
- Lights
- Ornaments
- Ribbon or garland
- Tree topper
- Storage box
- Optional: felt tree for kids (like the one Felisberta uses)

How to Assemble the Tree
This is the part that always takes the most time, so I prefer to do it first.
Here is the exact order I follow:
-
Open the stand and secure it.
-
Add the bottom branches and lock them in place.
-
Add the middle section.
-
Add the top.
-
Fluff every branch. This step changes everything in how your tree looks.

How to Decorate the Tree
This is the part most people overcomplicate. My method is simple and gives a balanced result.
Step 1. Add the lights
Always start with the lights. Place them from the inside toward the outside for depth. Test them before adding more layers.
Step 2. Add the biggest ornaments
I start with the large red and gold baubles. Spread them evenly to avoid “clusters”.
Step 3. Add medium ornaments
Stars, snowflakes, and decorative pieces. These fill the empty gaps.
Step 4. Add ribbon or garland
Place ribbon last so it doesn’t get hidden behind ornaments.
Step 5. Add the tree topper
A star, angel or any personal item. Felisberta loves adding her own angel as the final step.

Kid-Friendly Christmas Tree
If you have kids, especially younger ones, I recommend having a felt tree like Felisberta’s. They can decorate and redecorate as often as they want without touching the main tree.

How I Store Everything
The key to fast decorating next year is organised storage. I use a clear box and pack everything in simple order:
• bottom: tree branches
• middle: lights and garland
• top: ornaments in small bags
• lid: soft items like felt pieces

Final Thoughts
Putting up the Christmas tree doesn’t need to be stressful or complicated. With a clear system, good storage and a little patience fluffing branches, your tree will always look good. Hope this guide helps you simplify your Christmas decorating next year as well.
