Store Christmas tree decorations in a simple order and next December becomes much easier.

I know this because every year, when Christmas is over, I have two choices: throw everything into a box and regret it later, or take a few extra minutes now so future me does not suffer.

Future me deserves peace.

After putting up the tree, decorating the house and enjoying the Christmas season, taking everything down is usually the least exciting part. The living room needs space again, the festive mood starts fading, and suddenly there are branches, lights, ornaments, garland and little Christmas pieces everywhere.

This is how I store Christmas tree decorations at home using one large clear box, transparent bags and a very simple order that makes the next Christmas setup easier.

Why Christmas Decoration Storage Matters

The way I store Christmas decorations changes the next Christmas.

When everything is packed randomly, decorating the following year starts with confusion. Missing hooks. Tangled lights. Loose ornaments. One lonely bauble rolling somewhere under the sofa. The usual seasonal drama.

When everything has a place, the next Christmas setup feels easier before it even begins.

In our home, I use one large clear plastic storage box for the main Christmas tree items. I like clear boxes because I can see what is inside without opening everything. It also keeps the tree branches, ornaments, lights, garland and Felisberta’s felt Christmas tree pieces together in one place.

And in a family home, that matters. Storage areas can become mysterious lands where bags, toys, winter clothes and random cables go to live forever.

What I Use to Store Our Christmas Decorations

For our Christmas tree storage, I keep the system very simple:

  • One large clear plastic storage box
  • Transparent bags for ornaments
  • A separate transparent bag for Felisberta’s felt Christmas tree pieces
  • Space for the tree branches
  • Space for lights and garland
  • The tree topper placed where it stays visible and protected

The clear box is the most useful part of the system. I can see the branches, the ornaments and the softer Christmas pieces straight away. When December comes again, I do not have to open several boxes to understand what is inside.

One box. One place. Much less Christmas chaos.

How I Store the Christmas Tree Branches

I start with the tree itself.

Once the ornaments and lights are removed, I separate the tree sections and place the branches inside the box first. The branches are the largest part of the Christmas tree, so they create the base of the storage.

I gently press them down enough to fit, while still keeping some shape for the following year. I do not want the branches completely crushed, because that only makes the tree harder to open and fluff next Christmas.

This part takes a little patience, but it saves space.

Once the branches are inside the box, everything else becomes easier to organise around them.

How I Store Felisberta’s Felt Christmas Tree

Felisberta’s felt Christmas tree goes into the same clear box.

This works well because the felt tree is soft, flat and light. It does not need a heavy storage system, and it fits easily with the other Christmas decorations.

I keep the small felt decorations together in a transparent bag. That way, the little presents, stockings, stars and Santa pieces do not disappear inside the box.

And no, I am not hunting for a tiny felt Santa next December. Future me has limits.

The felt tree has become part of our Christmas routine, so keeping all its pieces together makes sense. When I take the box out again, her little Christmas activity is ready too.

How I Store the Ornaments

For the ornaments, I use transparent bags.

This makes the whole process much easier because I can separate the decorations by type, colour or size. Red baubles stay together. Gold and silver ornaments stay together. Smaller pieces stay together. Anything more delicate gets extra care.

I like using transparent bags because I can immediately see what is inside. When I open the Christmas box next year, I can spot the red ornaments, the silver pieces, the felt tree decorations and the lights before I even start decorating.

That saves time.

It also stops everything from rolling around inside the box. Christmas ornaments are beautiful, but once they are loose in a storage box, they become chaos with glitter.

How I Store the Lights and Garland

The lights and garland stay grouped in their own part of the box.

I do not like mixing lights with loose ornaments because that is how everything gets tangled. Lights are already dramatic enough. They do not need help.

I keep them together and place them where they remain visible and easy to reach next time. Garland also stays grouped so it does not wrap itself around the ornaments, the felt tree, the branches and possibly my patience.

A little separation makes a big difference.

When I open the box the following December, I want to find the lights without having to perform surgery on a festive knot.

My Real Christmas Storage Order

This is the order I use when I pack everything away:

  1. I remove the ornaments and separate them into transparent bags.
  2. I remove the lights and garland and keep them grouped.
  3. I separate the tree sections.
  4. I place the tree branches at the bottom of the clear box.
  5. I add Felisberta’s felt Christmas tree and keep the small felt pieces together in a bag.
  6. I place the ornament bags on top or around the branches.
  7. I add the lights and garland where they are visible.
  8. I close the box and everything is ready for next Christmas.

It is simple, and that is exactly why it works.

I do not want a Christmas storage system that takes more energy than the decorating itself. I want something I can actually repeat every year.

Why a Clear Storage Box Works So Well

A clear storage box is one of the easiest ways to make Christmas decorating less stressful.

I can see what is inside. The tree branches stay contained. The ornaments are protected in bags. The felt tree pieces do not get lost. The lights and garland stay with the rest of the tree decorations.

This kind of small home system helps because it is realistic.

Christmas decorating already takes time. Taking everything down after Christmas takes even more discipline because the festive mood is usually gone. So the storage system has to be simple, quick and useful.

For me, one large clear box works better than having decorations spread across different places.

Everything goes back together. Everything comes out together.

Beautiful.

How This Helps Next Christmas

The real benefit of this storage routine appears the following December.

When it is time to put up the tree again, I do not start with a search mission. I take out the clear box and the main Christmas tree setup is already there: branches, lights, garland, ornaments and Felisberta’s felt tree.

That makes the whole process feel calmer.

It also connects with my full guide on how to put up a Christmas tree at home. In that post, I show the full setup process, from assembling the tree to adding lights, ornaments, ribbon and the final touches.

Final Thoughts

Christmas storage is not the most magical part of the season, but it makes the next Christmas easier.

A clear box, transparent bags, grouped ornaments, protected lights and a simple order can save so much time the following year.

For me, this is the kind of home routine that quietly makes family life easier. Christmas comes back every year. The boxes come back every year. The decorations come back every year.

So I might as well make the return a little calmer.

Future me always says thank you. 🙏🏾
