If you are looking for the best horror movies for women to watch alone, this list comes from someone who has actually been watching a lot of horror lately. Recently I have been naturally drawn to scary films, especially the ones that rely on suspense and jump scares rather than blood and gore. I do not enjoy violent or graphic horror. What I love are the films that make you feel tense, alert and fully absorbed in the story.
Some of the movies I watched recently include The Nun I and II, The Exorcism of God, The Rite, The Others, The Wolfman, Resident Evil, Underworld, The Last Voyage of the Demeter and The Sixth Sense. They reminded me why horror is one of the easiest genres to watch when you want your mind to switch off. Your focus sharpens. The outside world fades. For a moment, there is only you and the movie.
Why Horror Helps You Switch Off
Horror is one of the most effective genres for mental disconnection. It forces your mind to stay present, stopping the constant mental noise. Suspense demands focus, and sometimes that is exactly what you need at the end of a long day.
It is not about fear. It is about presence. Horror brings you into the moment like almost no other genre.

My Favourite Horror Movies to Watch Alone
1. The Nun (2018)
A young nun travels to a remote Romanian monastery to investigate a mysterious death and confront a powerful evil force.
This movie is incredibly engaging, filled with suspense from start to finish. The story is well crafted with surprising moments that keep you alert. The horror scenes are effective without falling into excessive violence. The cast did an impeccable job bringing the characters to life. I enjoyed it so much that I was very happy to know there was a sequel.
2. The Nun II (2023)
Years after the events of the first film, a new wave of sinister incidents reveals that the demonic presence has returned stronger than before.
The second film managed to be even better than the first. There are great scare moments, a solid storyline and strong performances overall. The ending is not particularly surprising, but it does not take away from how much I enjoyed it.
3. The Exorcism of God (2022)
A priest haunted by a past possession faces a terrifying new case that forces him to confront his darkest secret.
This one truly surprised me. I was not expecting much, yet the story quickly pulled me in. The actors performed incredibly well and the final twist is excellent. I absolutely loved it.
4. The Rite (2011)
A skeptical seminary student attends exorcism training in Rome and meets a priest whose cases blur the line between psychology and true evil.
Anthony Hopkins delivers exactly what you expect from him. His performance carries the entire atmosphere of the film. The story is engaging, tense and the ending caught me completely off guard. A very good watch.

5. The Others (2001)
A mother living in an isolated mansion begins experiencing strange events while protecting her light sensitive children.
One of the best suspense horror films I have ever watched. The story is brilliant and the twist is unforgettable. Nicole Kidman is extraordinary and gives the movie its emotional depth.
6. The Wolfman (2010)
A man returns to his hometown to investigate his brother’s disappearance, only to face an ancient curse and a violent transformation.
A dark, atmospheric movie with yet another impressive performance by Anthony Hopkins. The character design is great and the story is interesting from beginning to end.
7. Resident Evil (2002)
A woman with memory loss must survive a deadly viral outbreak inside an underground lab overrun by mutated creatures.
A fantastic film series. The lead actress is incredible and the wardrobe is iconic. The blend of action and horror works perfectly. There is something powerful about a strong female main character leading the story.
8. Underworld (2003)
A vampire warrior becomes entangled in a centuries long war between vampires and werewolves while uncovering hidden truths about her past.
Another amazing film series. Action and horror mixed with a captivating storyline involving werewolves, vampires and romance. The female protagonist is stylish, strong and unforgettable.
9. The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)
The crew of a merchant ship experiences horrifying events during their voyage, unaware that Dracula himself is secretly on board.
This film surprised me in the best way. It follows Dracula’s journey to London and the story is executed beautifully. The character design for Dracula is outstanding and more convincing than many others I have seen. The cast is excellent, especially the young boy. A captivating film from beginning to end.
10. The Sixth Sense (1999)
A child psychologist works with a young boy who claims he can see dead people, leading to revelations neither of them expected.
A psychological masterpiece with one of the best endings ever created. Bruce Willis and the child actor give incredible performances. The story is emotional, atmospheric and impossible to forget. Highly recommended.

My Saturday Me Time Ritual
Every Saturday night, after I put my daughter to bed, I settle into the sofa with a drink of my choice and watch a movie. It is my weekly moment, one I protect intentionally. For those few hours, I get to be with myself, breathe, unwind and feel my body calming down.
Lately, I have been choosing more horror and suspense films. They are not relaxing in the traditional sense, but they are one of the most effective ways for my mind to stop running. Horror forces me into the present moment. The story takes over, the tension keeps me alert and everything else fades into the background.
It is a simple ritual, yet it keeps me grounded, centered and connected to myself. And honestly, I look forward to it every week.
