If your skin has been changing and you are not sure what to do about it, keep reading. This is my nighttime skincare routine over 40, and it has made a real difference for me.

I am not a dermatologist. I am not a beauty influencer with a ring light and a sponsored shelf of $200 serums. I am a 46-year-old woman who takes care of her skin the way most of us actually live: consistently, practically, and on a budget.

And people keep asking me what I do.

So here it is. My full nighttime skincare routine over 40, step by step, with every product I actually use.

Step 1: Remove Your Makeup First. No Exceptions.

This is the one rule I have never broken. Ever.

I do not care how tired you are. You cannot go to bed with makeup on your face. It clogs your pores, breaks down your skin barrier, and speeds up aging overnight. Everything else you do for your skin gets undone if you skip this step.

I use Nivea Micellar Water with a cotton pad. That is it. Simple, gentle, and it removes everything cleanly, including foundation, concealer, and gloss. I rarely wear eye makeup because my eyes are very sensitive, but when I do, I use a separate eye makeup remover that is formulated for the eye area.

The micellar water does not pull or irritate. It just works.

Step 2: Cleanse in the Shower (and Do It in the Right Order)

I shower at night, and the order I do things matters.

First, I wet my body and apply my facial cleansing gel. I let it sit on my skin while I move on to washing my body. That way the gel has time to actually do its job instead of being rinsed off immediately.

For my body, I use a Bioten shower gel with a loofah. I got into this brand almost by accident and I love it, especially the pump bottle because it is so much easier to use in the shower. It is almost finished, which tells you how much I use it.

By the time I finish washing my body, the facial gel has done its thing. Then I rinse everything off together.

Step 3: The Body Cream That Changed My Skin (and My Daughter’s)

Okay, this is the part I want you to pay attention to.

The body cream I use is Mixa, and I have loved this brand since I was young. My father used to bring it from France. When I found it at the store here, I genuinely could not believe it.

I bought the version for very dry skin. It is a 400ml jar, normally around 10 euros, but I have caught it on sale twice now for around 6.50 euros. If you see it at that price, buy two.

Here is what makes it different from other creams: it is rich without being greasy. When you first look at it, you think it is going to feel heavy. It does not. It absorbs beautifully, smells light, and leaves your skin genuinely soft.

And the best part? You can use it on your face, body, and hands.

My daughter uses it all over, face included. I was more cautious at first, so I started using it just on my body. About three weeks in, I decided to try it on my face as well. I have been using it on my face for a few weeks now and my skin is cleaner, calmer, and the dry patches are gone.

I cannot recommend this cream enough. I am obsessed.

Pro tip: I put some of the cream in a small separate jar that I use only for my face. It is more hygienic and it keeps things organized. Same cream, just stored separately.

Step 4: Dental Hygiene (Yes, This Counts for Your Overall Health)

I brush my teeth after my shower and use two different toothpastes strategically. In the morning I use a whitening toothpaste, and at night I use a fresh breath formula. After brushing, I always use Listerine mouthwash.

I know this sounds basic, but I genuinely believe a full oral hygiene routine at night matters for your overall health and well-being, not just your teeth.

Step 5: Facial Toner

After my teeth, I apply my Nivea facial toner to my face and let it absorb while I take care of my hair.

I use Nivea for a lot of things. It is affordable, widely available, and it works for my skin type.

Step 6: Hair Care (Quick, Not Optional)

I have curly hair, so while the toner is being absorbed, I apply a Curl Activator to my hair. It hydrates the curls and helps define them overnight. By morning my hair looks much better than if I had skipped it.

I leave my hair loose so it can dry naturally and absorb the product properly.

Step 7: Face Cream (Back to the Mixa)

Once the toner has been absorbed, I apply the Mixa cream to my face from my separate little jar.

That is genuinely my full facial routine: toner, then cream. Nothing complicated. No 10-step process.

I have been doing a version of this since I was young. Cleanse, tone, moisturize. The products have changed over the years, but the habit has not.

The Part That Nobody Talks About Enough

Skincare products matter. But so does what you put into your body.

I am not a perfect eater. I have my indulgences, just like everyone. But there are three things I do not compromise on:

Fruit. I eat a lot of it, every day. It is not a health goal for me, it is just something I genuinely enjoy and my body feels the difference.

Vegetables. I love soup, salads, and sauteed greens. My daughter and I are both obsessed with boiled broccoli right now. We eat it almost every day and neither of us is tired of it yet.

Water. I drink a minimum of 3 liters a day. In spring, summer, and fall I keep bottles of cold water in the fridge and I refill them constantly. I actually enjoy drinking water, it is not a chore for me. My daughter has picked up the same habit. She goes to the fridge, grabs her little bottle, and drinks. Room temperature works too if you prefer it that way.

These three things, combined with a consistent skincare routine, are the biggest factors in how my skin looks at 46.

And Then There Is Sleep

Sleep is not optional. Your skin repairs itself while you rest. Consistently poor sleep shows up on your face faster than almost anything else.

I am not going to pretend I get a perfect 8 hours every night. But I prioritize rest, and I have seen the difference on the nights when I do not.

Good sleep, good food, enough water, and a simple routine that you actually do. That is the whole formula.

If you want to go deeper on the habits that support your overall well-being, I wrote about that too: Self-Care for Women: Simple Tips to Support Mental Health.

What I Use at 46: The Full Product List

  • Nivea Micellar Water (makeup removal)
  • Eye makeup remover (for sensitive eyes, when needed)
  • Facial cleansing gel (applied in the shower)
  • Bioten shower gel with loofah
  • Mixa body and face cream for very dry skin
  • Whitening toothpaste (mornings)
  • Fresh breath toothpaste (nights)
  • Listerine mouthwash
  • Nivea facial toner
  • Curl Activator (for curly hair)

None of these are luxury products. All of them are things I found in regular stores, often on sale. The most important thing is not the brand name. It is the consistency of showing up for your skin every single night, no matter how tired you are.

Final Thoughts

Skincare does not have to be complicated or expensive to work. What I have learned at 46 is that consistency beats everything else. The fanciest cream in the world will not help you if you only use it twice a week. But a simple routine that you do every single night, combined with how you eat, how much you drink, and how well you sleep, adds up to something visible over time. That is what I see when I look in the mirror now. Not perfection. Just skin that is taken care of. And at this stage of life, that is more than enough.
