Homeschool study room setup

Since Felisberta is homeschooled, I decided to create a dedicated study space for her—her very own study room. She has a designated area with all the materials she needs, which helps her understand that when it’s time to study, we go into the room, close the door, and focus on learning.

💡 Tip: I learned this from my mother (who was a primary school teacher)—using a visual signal on the door. When the sign is green, she can leave; when it’s red, she knows to stay inside. She already understands the system well!

However, this room is also home to many of her toys, providing a space for relaxation and playtime.

It’s important to note that in homeschooling, learning isn’t confined to a study room. She learns throughout the entire house and even beyond. Learning is a continuous and immersive process. Children are like sponges, and every moment is an opportunity for knowledge.

Her study room is organized into six areas: the Reading Corner, Desk, Toy Storage, Supply Cabinet, Central Rug, and Display Board.

Reading Corner 📚

This is one of Felisberta’s favorite spots! Whether it’s because of the cozy couch or the books she loves to explore, this little corner is a winner.

Here, she enjoys reading moments, whether it’s a story read aloud by her babysitter or me, or simply browsing a book on her own.

As you can see in the photo, she even fell asleep with a book in her lap—I love it! 😍

Desk ✏️

This is where we do schoolwork and even some fun activities.

For example, she loves assembling puzzles on the desk.

Above the desk, I installed two shelves with all the materials she needs for her schoolwork—everything is within easy reach so she can stay focused.

On top of the shelves, we keep the Visual Arts Portfolio, where we store her artwork. Some pieces are displayed for a while, then stored in the portfolio.

💺 New this year: Felisberta has a new chair, and she absolutely loves it!

Toy Storage 🎲

On this shelf, I place the toys she’s currently playing with the most. They are within her reach, so she can grab them anytime she wants.

Of course, we reinforce the habit of cleaning up after playing. She already knows the rule, but like any child, sometimes she tries to skip the tidying up.

When she realizes we won’t do it for her and that it’s her responsibility, she ends up putting things away. We don’t move on to another activity until everything is organized. This method has been working very well!

Supply Cabinet 📦

In this cabinet, we store school supplies that are not in everyday use, folders, extra toys, and other materials.

It keeps everything organized and accessible without cluttering the space.

Central Rug & Whiteboard 🎨

Felisberta loves the rug area! This is where she plays, lies down, sits, and relaxes—she simply enjoys it.

The whiteboard is used for various activities and lessons, and we move it around the room as needed.

Display Boards 🖼️

Since this is a study space, visual aids play an important role. We have three display boards in the room:

  • Seasons Board – Helps Felisberta learn about the current season.
  • Themed Learning Board – Displays topics she is currently learning (right now, it’s Christmas vocabulary!).
  • Artwork & Project Board – A space to showcase Felisberta’s work, which is constantly updated.

Is a Study Room Necessary for Homeschooling? 🤔

I want to be clear that a study room is not mandatory for homeschooling.

However, if you have the possibility, it’s a great option.

For us, it works perfectly. Felisberta sees this space as her learning area, just like I have my own office space. She understands that, just like mom has her work area, she has hers too.
